Middle and Upper School Music Teacher Shea Welsh Releases CD, Arrival
When he isn’t inspiring New Roads’ students to scale new musical heights, middle school pop ensemble and high school jazz, pop and rock bands teacher Shea Welsh is making waves in the music industry. In addition to teaching, Shea is a guitarist, songwriter and producer who has recently released Arrival, his new CD for the Chicago based Blujazz label. Arrival showcases Shea’s ability to move freely through any musical genre.
DownBeat Magazine’s Dan Ouellette says, “In this centennial birthday year of such jazz icons as Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Thelonious Monk, tributes to the elders of the jazz legacy are important. They remind us of where the music has come from. But what’s unfortunately too often missing is the continuum of the past to the future. And what’s particularly void is the reaching out to a new audience where the jazz of old simply does not resonate. Welsh’s Arrival brings a relevancy to the umbrella of jazz, which historically incorporates what’s going on at the time and helping the current generation of listeners to relate to new textures, colors, sounds. With his wide stylistic array of repertoire, Welsh has his hand firmly on that pulse.”
Arrival is the latest addition to Shea’s impressive musical career. He is a University of Southern California Thornton School of Music Studio/Jazz Guitar faculty member and has written two instructional books, Blues Guitar Lessons Volumes I and II, for The Alfred Publishing Company. He has logged in countless hours as a session player with some of the industry’s top producers, and has headlined at the Long Island Jazz & Blues Festival, the Panama Jazz Festival, the Miami Beach Jazz Festival, and at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland. Shea is also the musical director for Michelle Coltrane and produced seven songs on her latest record.
Arrival is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, CD Baby and all other digital platforms.
