Speech & Debate Teams Represent New Roads at Cal State Long Beach Tournament
Upper school Speech and Debate teams led a successful weekend of competition at the Jack Howe Memorial Tournament at Cal State Long Beach. The debates were held outdoors on a grassy knoll, reminiscent of the famous outdoor debates in London‘s Hyde Park, and topics included the proposed “space force," UN Human Rights Council, attorney/client privilege, school security, and foreign election interference.
In his first high school tournament, 9th grader Jack placed 11th out of 174 speakers. 11th grader Ella reached the semi finals in original oratory and earned one of the two bids needed to qualify for the National Individual Event Tournament of Champions (NIETOC). 11th graders Sean and Frank made it to the octofinals in parliamentary debate, while 10th grader Ben and 11th grader Nolan placed among the top twenty speakers.
Overall, the teams achieved an impressive win percentage, and coaches noted the high level of debate that New Roads ninth graders displayed so early in their high school debate careers. Students are excited to continue the season's momentum at a local league tournament, this Saturday 9/29 at Peninsula!
