11th Grader Cole Prawer Honored with Scholastic Art and Writing Award
Congratulations to 11th grader Cole Prawer on earning a silver key in the 2023 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, which is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens. Entries are selected for awards by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts. Through its 100-year history, Scholastic Awards judges have included Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Judy Blume, Billy Collins, Paul Giamatti, David Sedaris, Lesley Stahl, Nikki Giovanni, Shinique Smith, Rashid Johnson, and others. Jurors look for works that exemplify the Awards’ core values: originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
Cole’s essay, The Calico Cat, explores friendship, love and loss through the eyes and heart of a cat. Cole shares his inspiration for writing this award-winning essay, “I wanted readers to feel the impact that non-romantic love can have, from an approachable angle.”
