GLASS on the Go!

On February 8, 12th graders Kateryn Rosales and Jessica Torrey, and 11th grader Sophie Chertock traveled with Upper School Science Department Chair Mr. Cleveland to hear a speaker in the UCLA Evolutionary Medicine Month series. The topic, Alzheimer’s Disease and the Evolution of Human Longevity, meshed well with both Kateryn’s and Sophie’s Independent Study Program (ISP) research, and supported Jessica’s interest in human evolution. The speaker, Dr. Molly Fox, is an example the high level of successes that women can have in STEM research and academics.

On February 11, 11th grader Emilia Zielinski and Mr. Cleveland attended Archer School’s STEM Educators’ Conference. Emilia’s ISP seeks to model our GLASS (Girls Learning, Advancing and Succeeding in Science) program, implement it at New Roads Middle School, and offer it to middle schools that lack programs designed to help girls advance in STEM. Emilia explored impressive Maker Space set ups and learned about innovative ways to share STEM experiences. We thank Roberta Weintraub both for sponsoring Archer’s Conference and for being the sponsor of our GLASS program.
