Middle School Debaters Top Harvard-Westlake, Brentwood, Windward, and Campbell Hall in Regional Tournament

Our nationally recognized middle school debate team was unstoppable at Saturday's Pacific Coast Debate League regional tournament, hosted on our campus. Competing against eight schools with long-standing debate programs, our three-year-old team placed 1st for most wins! 8th grader and NRES alum Mihret Melaku won the tournament gavel for best speaker, Isabelle Moore, another NRES alum, took home the 3rd place Individual Speaker Award, and five of the New Roads debaters placed in the “Top 10” of 62 speakers.

The undefeated team of Kiran Baez, Mihret Melaku and Benjamin Wasson earned the 1st place team award, with over twenty teams competing! In the same category, Socorro Park, Lola Newman and Isabel Moore won 3rd place, and Mateo Buadu-Colbert and Liam Waldman won 4th place. Jack Adams, Nash Myer and Hunter Williams, and Zooey Gastelo, Rufus Hale and Jordan Podell also took home team trophies.

The 2016-17 debate season is off to a very promising start! Go Jags!
