Jackson Carrico's 57 Years Ago Short Film Screened Across National Film Festivals

Inspired by his grandfather, junior Jackson Carrico set out to create a short film that would showcase the pervasive issues of police brutality and racial injustice in the United States. In the film, images of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, among others, and Black Lives Matter protests are juxtaposed with those of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s to underscore that not much has changed. Jackson notes that he wanted “to show that this issue is not happening more, it is only being filmed more.”

Originally intended for the MLK Jr. “Unfinished Work” event, hosted by New Roads and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Westside Coalition in January, 57 Years Ago started gaining traction in the national film festival circuit, having been screened in the Standalone Film Festival & AwardsLift Off Sessions Film Festival and the NAFCO Film Festival Series. Jackson says that while he wasn’t expecting this level of recognition, he’s “really happy and excited about it. It’s given me some momentum to start working on new films. I just really enjoy it,” he concludes.
