ABC7 Profiles 10th Grader Mihret Melaku and Student-Led Civil Discourse Club

10th grader Mihret Melaku and his work in co-founding the upper school Civil Discourse Club was recently recognized in an ABC7 Cool Kids segment.

When 10th grade classmates and friends Mihret, Cameron Cooper and Ben Wasson expressed their shared desire to facilitate a student-led environment for engaging in discussions about the changing political climate, they took action. With the support of the upper school administration, the Civil Discourse Club was founded as a place for members to gather once a week and share opinions about current events as a group.

"The hope is that we create these ripples of political education and encourage people to talk with one another," says Mihret, whose efforts in organizing the club have helped others to "recognize the person behind the opinion," and "empathize with the other side's arguments and perspectives."

Head of School Luthern Williams comments, "They give me hope. They are able to find common ground that's necessary for the country to continue to thrive."
