New Roads Elementary School delivers inspired education through an active, engaging academic program that encourages self-directed inquiry and discovery; incorporates research-supported best practices; honors a broad range of learning styles and nurtures the innate joy and exuberance of childhood. Our leading-edge curriculum is thoughtfully developed and delivered by talented, supportive and effective faculty.
The Elementary School’s approach to instruction personalizes each child’s education, modifying program content, activities and strategies for a broad range of learners; while connecting students with their unique talents and aspirations. Classes do not exceed 22 students, and are guided by both a teacher and full-time co-teacher at every grade level.
Our scope and sequence balances the need to acquire and master traditional academic proficiencies with the growing demand for multi-dimensional, “21st Century” skills like collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. While our approach to instruction is crafted to support our unique educational philosophy and student population, we draw upon several proven curricular resources, including:
• Investigations supports students to make sense of mathematics and learn that they can be mathematical thinkers
• Responsive Classroom helps teachers to help children master both academics and social-emotional skills in a meaningful, integrated way;
• Words Their Way: Word Study in Action Developmental Model recognizes the synchronous nature of reading, writing, and spelling;
• Writer's Workshop is an interdisciplinary writing technique which can build students' fluency in writing through continuous, repeated exposure to the process of writing.
Students at the Elementary School leave their home classrooms throughout the week to meet with specialist teachers in the areas of Physical Education, Discovery Center Science Lab, Creative Movement, Visual Art, Music and Fourth/Fifth Grade Orchestra. Our Spanish language program focuses on building practical Spanish communication skills and cultural literacy.
New Roads Elementary School’s Human Development Program teaches "speaking and listening from the heart," while our community action initiatives encouraged students to work actively towards improving the lives of others.
As they prepare for the transition to Middle School, fourth and fifth grade students choose an elective class, with offerings have included Lego Robotics, Bookmaking, Astronomy, Soccer, and Painting, to name a few.
Our program is geared towards development and understanding of fundamental skills rather than towards competition for grades. Teachers set expectations for skill acquisition and assess students with respect to whether they have mastered; demonstrated or are still developing certain skills.
