7th Graders Win at L.A. County Streets to Sea Competition

On April 25, 7th graders won the Los Angeles County Streets to the Sea competition, which asks students to create an education campaign that addressed a pressing environmental issue in their community. Judged at the Disney Synergy Lab, New Roads students presented their research about a water conservation program on campus.

To do this, they teamed up with the facilities staff and measured water usage from toilets and water fountains. They found that water fountains were particularly wasteful. Having three students drink water for 10 seconds at a time, the Middle Schoolers averaged the water used from the fountains to find that 61% of that water is actually wasted! To reduce the waste, students tested an incentive program that rewarded students who used a reusable water bottle with a piece of candy. In their trial program, 22 students participated, showing that it could work!

This is the third consecutive year that our middle schoolers hves won this competition. Students from this year’s winning team will be rewarded with a trip to the Floating Laboratory in Long Beach.
