New Roads Speech and Debate Recap

New Roads Hosts National Parlimentary Tournament of Champions

Junior Nolan Windham and Sophmore Ben Wasson, who now rank 23rd in the national parlimentary team rankings, advanced to the octofinal 'sweet sixteen' at the National Parliamentary Tournament of Champions in early April! The pair placed 13th in the preliminary rounds, going up against talented opponents with national debate experience. The team had a deep run in the tournament before losing 2-1 in a challenging debate where they had to advocate for the ACLU defending white nationalists against the No. 3 ranked school in the country. They came just a vote short of advancing to the last eight quarterfinals.

Juniors Frank Gerolmo and Sean Grey, who now rank 11th in team rankings, also had great performances at the tournament, narrowly missing the elimination round by just one ballot.

With their successful performance at the Tournament of Champions, New Roads' Speech and Debate team moved up to the No. 10 ranked spot in the National Parliamentary Rankings and regained the top spot in the city of Los Angeles!

Middle School Debaters Impress at Polytechnic Tournament

New Roads’ middle school Speech and Debate Team had another successful showing at the Polytechnic Tournament. In a crowded field of 118 competitors, five New Roads debaters placed in the top 20. Toby Leher and Sofia Locatelli won 19th place while Anya Nelson, Nathalie Stefanov, and Cole Prawer placed 17th.

While this finish is impressive on its own, their placing is even more significant when considering that the team is in just their first season as an offically organized team.
