9th Grader and Team Win Impact Award at the Teen Hackathon

On March 16 and 17, New Roads School hosted the Teen Hackathon. Almost 100 students from schools all around Los Angeles came to put their coding and computer skills to the test in a series of rigorous all-day events, workshops and competitions.

New Roads 9th Grader Ayler Fielder and his team represented New Roads proudly. They won the U.S. Impact Award, which recognizes the project with the best social impact idea. Ayler and his team focused on gaming accessibility for paralyzed gamers, creating a game with a headset that operates using color recognition for those who are unable to use handheld controllers.

Middle and Upper School students and teachers participated in the event and teachers Debbie Weissmann and Sasha DeKoninck volunteered to teach App Design and the Wearable Technology workshops. New Roads parent Keith Kiyohara, a Google employee, volunteered as one of the judges.
