New Roads' 'Humans' Dominate at Robotics Competition

Over Spring Break, the New Roads Robotics team traveled to Las Vegas to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition which drew teams from 45 schools across the world.

New Roads’ 17-member robotics team, called Humans, with help from parent Keith Kiyohara and Robotics Coordinator Oscar Vasquez, built a 110 lb robot that could complete a series of complex tasks including climbing a 21-inch vertical platform. The robot, which they named “Polaris”, was up for the challenges as the Humans won eight of their 11 matches and made it all the way to the semifinals!

"This team played with pure heart. Everyone stepped up as an individual and as a team member. Students communicated brilliantly and kindly with each other and worked well together. Each person played a crucial part. The students came together and worked as one organism with a common purpose," said teacher Danny Figueroa who went with the team to Las Vegas.

The Humans' showing is made even more impressive considering that a majority of the Robotics team graduated in the class of 2018. Robotics Coordinator Oscar Vasquez said, “The team is extremely proud of this accomplishment and is very excited for the 2020 season.”
