Science, Robotics, and Girls Who Code Students Get Private Tour of The Boring Company

Students from Robotics, Girls Who Code and upper school Science classes visited Elon Musk's The Boring Company, where they received a guided tour of the facility and learned about the tunnel systems being built underneath Los Angeles. The Hawthorne site is shared with SpaceX and Tesla, fellow technology companies founded by Musk.

With help from teachers Janine Extavour and Michelle Bernstein, 11th grader Nolan Windham organized the visit after learning about the company's invitation for schools to apply for a private tour. "I think this field is going to become prolific and ubiquitous for transport in the near future, and I think our community having an early look at where this upcoming technology is coming from is very educational." Nolan expressed his gratitude for the school's support. "New Roads teachers are really supportive of making these types of things happen."

New Roads students received a private tour of the company's first test tunnel, which will soon be open to the public, and learned about the company's groundbreaking research in hopes of making tunnel production more efficient.

"I think our tour guide found New Roads students' questions unique," says Nolan. "We asked inquistive and challenging questions. For example, the tunnel only goes one direction. Students wondered how the tunnel would work with two way traffic. I expect that we went deeper than what the tour guide was used to hearing."
