The Herb Alpert Educational Village UPDATE:

With the opening of our new Santa Monica Middle School campus on September 10th, we have taken one more step towards the materialization of our innovative Herb Alpert Educational Village. Named for its founding benefactor, the Herb Alpert Educational Village will bring together in one location diverse elements of the education community – researchers, civic organizations, students and faculty – to foster innovative, creative collaborations that confront the challenge of improving student success and implementing best practices throughout Los Angeles and nationwide. Upon completion, anticipated in late 2011, the Educational Village be home to New Roads School, the New Visions Foundation and a state-of-the-art Performing Arts and Leadership Center, including a 350-seat theater and office/meeting space for non-profit organizations involved with educational advancement.   Please check back often to watch our progress.

On the high school campus, preparations are underway for construction of the Performing Arts and Leadership Center. Salvageable items have been removed from the “courtyard building” on campus, the basketball court and baseball batting cage have been relocated, and additional modular buildings are being installed to accommodate – temporarily - offices and classrooms previously housed in the courtyard building.  The “studio” building, containing the Huerta multi-purpose room, is not involved in this first phase of construction.
