Dr. David Bryan
President, Head of School
Co-Director, High School

David Bryan was born in New York City and grew up in large cities and small rural communities in New York and New Jersey. He attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook (BA, 1974), the University of California at Los Angeles (MS, 1978), and the State University of New York at Buffalo (JD, 1982, Ph.D., 1985). Broad interests have led to several careers, including teaching law, communication theory, and kinesiology at SUNY @ Buffalo and UCLA, kinesiological research at UCLA’s Electromyography Lab, and private kinesiology practice.

In 1985 he started a private business and began what would be a three year exploration of other cultures that took him to many Caribbean islands. In 1989 he moved to Los Angeles, where he taught briefly in the LA Unified public school district, and then for seven years at Crossroads, an independent K-12 school in Santa Monica, California. Also at Crossroads, he served as the Chair and then Dean of Human Development.

In 1995 he became the founding Head of School of New Roads School. His publications include articles on law, language, mass media, movement and health and have appeared in such journals as The Buffalo Law Review, The Native American Law Review, Revision and others.

Joe Wise
Director, Center for Effective Learning (C4EL)
Assistant Head of School, Curriculum & Assessment

Joe Wise has been in the classroom for over thirty years. He currently teaches physics in addition to being our K-12 Assistant Head of School for Curriculum and Assessment and the Director of New Roads School’s research arm, the Center for Effective Learning (C4EL). Joe has extensive experience integrating technology into K-12 classrooms and developing novel methods in using technology to improve learning. Joe is active in the educational research and development arena. He is an educational consultant for the Center for Embedded Network Sensing at UCLA, is the Education/Public Outreach manager for NASA’s Dawn Mission to the Asteroid Belt and has co-authored numerous articles published in academic journals.

Tyrone Sandaal
Co-Director, High School

Tyrone Sandaal’s passion for education dates back to his journey through the public schools of Miami, FL, where he saw both the best and worst of it. He attended the nation’s first bilingual public school, Coral Way Elementary, and later went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Pomona College. Tyrone credits Coral Way for helping him maintain his first language, Spanish, and Pomona for bringing him to California and teaching him how to write. Tyrone began his teaching career in Washington, DC as a member of Teach For America

Dr. Evan Beachy
Director, Malibu Middle School
Dean of Faculty, K-12

Evan Beachy has been the Director of New Roads’ Malibu Middle School campus since 2007. He previously taught Fifth Grade at New Roads Elementary School but has also taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels at both private and public schools in Los Angeles, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Costa Rica. Evan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology (Cum Laude) from Harvard University and completed the Harvard Undergraduate Teaching Education Program as part of this degree. In addition, he holds a doctoral degree from the University of California Los Angeles in Educational Leadership, with an emphasis on the transition from elementary to middle school settings in private independent schools.

Dan Weslow
Director, Santa Monica Middle School

Daniel graduated from the University of California Los Angeles with a B.A. in History and Political Science. He earned his M.A. in Education from Pepperdine University, with an emphasis in Curriculum Development and Leadership, and currently is finishing his doctorate in Education where his focus of study is on parent involvement and private school sustainability. Daniel holds a California Single-Subject Teaching Credential in History, and has taught in public and private schools at middle, high school, and community college levels. Before joining the New Roads community, he was Head of School at New Heights Preparatory in Northridge, CA. Daniel has published articles on curriculum implementation techniques and organizational change.

Dr. Jacqueline Olivier
Director, New Roads Elementary

Dr. Olivier joined the New Roads community in 2010 with a wealth of experience in both public and private elementary education. She began her career as a bilingual classroom teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, and then moved to independent school education holding positions as Technology Director, Academic Dean, and Assistant Head of school at Carlthorp School in Santa Monica; and as Head of School at The Gillispie School in La Jolla. Immediately prior to joining New Roads, Dr. Olivier was the Founding Head of School at New Village Leadership Academy in Calabasas. She graduated UCLA with a degree in Spanish and Linguistics; received her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Cal State, Northridge; and received her Doctoral Degree in Education from Pepperdine University.

Patrick McCabe
Assistant Head of School for Operations

In 2001, Pat entered the world of education after a successful 20-year career in marketing. He was President/CEO/Owner of McSand Group and a Senior Vice President with Cablevision-Sports Channel Networks and Western International Media. Pat is Past President of Harvard-Westlake Alumni Los Angeles and Wesleyan University Alumni Los Angeles, and is President of the Santa Monica College Foundation. Pat is also President of the Board of Shane’s Inspiration, Executive Vice President of the Music Center/Fraternity of Friends and a member of the Board of Directors of the New Visions Foundation, Determined to Succeed and the Student Voice Foundation. Pat holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University.
